Introduction
Binance has revealed the details of a $6.43 billion hack that occurred on October 29, 2026. The hack was the result of a sophisticated multi-stage campaign that involved fake job interviews, malicious software downloads, and compromised internal AI tooling.
The Hack
The hack began in June 2026 when an employee on the wallet developer team downloaded a tool from the internet that hackers had tampered with. The exchange said it detected this afterwards, replaced the device and changed credentials, but the employee's role and those of others on the wallet team were exposed.
Practical Response
Australian healthcare organisations and Melbourne businesses should review their own hiring processes and ensure that they are not vulnerable to similar social engineering attacks. They should also consider implementing additional security measures, such as AI-enabled detection and endpoint protection, to prevent similar hacks.
